Introduction
Welcome to the ScooterAlia Riding Guide for Malta — the sunny Mediterranean archipelago where ancient history meets crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re cruising the fortified streets of Valletta, exploring the silent city of Mdina, or catching the ferry to Gozo, this guide will help you ride confidently across the Maltese islands.
License & Documents
Malta follows EU license categories. For 50cc scooters, you need either an AM license or a standard car license — category B. For 125cc scooters, you’ll need a proper motorcycle license: category A1, A2, or full A. A car license alone won’t work for anything above 50cc.
If your license uses non-Roman letters, you’ll need an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most rental companies require you to be at least 21 years old. Some partners on ScooterAlia offer rentals to riders 18 and over.
When collecting your scooter, have ready: your physical license card, your passport or EU ID, and a credit card for the security deposit. Deposits typically range from €100 to €300.
Riding in Malta
Drive on the Left: Malta drives on the left. Take your time during the first hour, especially at roundabouts where traffic flows clockwise.
Speed Limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on regional roads. Scooters under 125cc aren’t allowed on major bypass roads.
Helmets: Mandatory for rider and passenger. Blood alcohol limit is 0.08%. Mobile phones while riding are strictly prohibited.
Parking Colors: White lines — park here. Yellow — never (garage access). Blue — disabled only. Green — residents only (Valletta area).
Valletta: Has a Controlled Vehicular Access zone with fees. Most riders park near Floriana and walk in.
Fuel: A full tank costs €8-10 and lasts a full day. ScooterAlia partners return bikes with at least a quarter tank.
Route 1: Valletta to Mdina — The Silent City
Head inland toward Mdina, Malta’s ancient fortified capital. The ride takes about 25 minutes. Mdina is called the “Silent City” because cars are banned inside. Park at the main gate, walk the medieval streets, visit St Paul’s Cathedral and Fontanella Tea Garden. Combine with nearby Rabat for St Paul’s Catacombs.
Route 2: Dingli Cliffs Sunset Run
Malta’s most scenic coastal ride. Head west from Rabat following Triq Panoramika. At 250 meters, Dingli Cliffs are Malta’s highest point with views to Filfla island. Stop at the Chapel of Mary Magdalene for legendary sunsets. Distance: 30km round trip. Best time: late afternoon.
Route 3: Marsaxlokk Fishing Village
Malta’s most photogenic village, 20 minutes from Valletta. See hundreds of brightly painted “luzzus” boats with the Eye of Osiris. Visit Sunday morning for the fish market. Continue to the Blue Grotto for sea cave boat trips.
Gozo Island — The Ultimate Day Trip
Take the ferry from Ċirkewwa terminal (45 min from Valletta). The 25-minute crossing runs every 45 minutes. Check your ScooterAlia rental agreement permits Gozo travel.
Essential Gozo Loop:
1. Victoria & Citadel — Panoramic views from the medieval fortified city.
2. Dwejra & Inland Sea — Where the Azure Window once stood. Game of Thrones filming location.
3. Marsalforn & Salt Pans — Seaside town for lunch. Xwejni Salt Pans date to Roman times.

Practical Tips
Weather: Best months April–June and September–November. Summer exceeds 35°C. Winter brings sudden rain.
Navigation: Use Waze rather than Google Maps. Download offline maps.
Emergency: Dial 112. Save your rental provider’s number.
Roads: Main roads good, secondary routes can be rough with potholes.

Our group of guys decided to rent scooters in Sliema and it completely transformed our Malta trip! Cruising along the Sliema Front 🌊 on our scooters, we felt the perfect blend of adventure and freedom, discovering hidden bays, stopping at local pubs, and accessing spots impossible to reach by car.
From Sliema, we rode to St. Julian's and onward to the historic Three Cities. The Mediterranean sun ☀️ on our scooter ride made every moment unforgettable. We could stop spontaneously—for a quick dip in the crystal-clear waters or an impromptu pint at a traditional Maltese bar.
What impressed us most was the convenience. With our scooters from Scooteralia, we navigated through Valletta's narrow streets 🏰 with ease, explored the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, and discovered secluded swimming spots along the rugged coastline, all within minutes from our base.
We ventured to the dramatic cliffs of Dingli and the ancient temples of Mdina, experiencing Malta's rich history and stunning landscapes. On scooters, every ride felt like an expedition and every stop revealed another piece of Malta's charm.
