License & Documents

Greece is strict about licenses — stricter than many other European countries. For any scooter or motorcycle over 50cc, you need a proper motorcycle license: category A1, A2, or A printed on your license card. A regular car license (category B) is not valid for scooters in Greece, even if it works in your home country. This catches many visitors by surprise, especially those from the UK, Spain, or Italy where a car license sometimes allows 125cc riding. In Greece, it doesn’t.

If your license was issued in the EU, you’re good — just bring the card. For visitors from the US, Canada, Australia, or most other countries, you’ll also need an International Driving Permit alongside your national license.

When you pick up your rental, bring your physical license card, your passport or ID, and a credit or debit card for the security deposit. Most Athens rental shops block between €150 and €300 on your card, which is released when you return the bike undamaged.

Riding in Athens

Greek drivers can be assertive. Expect cars to change lanes without signaling, and watch for vehicles stopping suddenly for double-parking. The good news? Greek drivers are very used to scooters and motorcycles, and they’ll generally give you space.

Key rules: Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger. Speed limit in Athens city center is 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h in residential areas. Scooters under 125cc are not allowed on highways or the Attiki Odos ring road.

Fuel: Look for BP, Shell, or EKO stations. A full tank on a 125cc scooter costs around €8-10 and lasts a full day of city riding.

Parking: Use designated motorcycle parking areas marked with a scooter symbol on the ground. Avoid sidewalks in tourist areas — fines are issued.

Warning: The historic center around the Acropolis (Plaka, Monastiraki) has vehicle restrictions, especially on weekends. Park before entering on foot.

Route 1: Athenian Riviera to Cape Sounion

Perfect for your first day — scenic, straightforward, and stunning. Head south from Athens toward Glyfada (20 minutes), then follow the coastal road through Vouliagmeni and Varkiza to Cape Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon at the cape is spectacular at sunset. Distance: 70km one way. Duration: 3-4 hours with stops.

Route 2: Mount Hymettus

For panoramic views over the entire city, ride up Mount Hymettus via Leoforos Imittou. The road twists through pine forests with viewpoints overlooking Athens and the islands. Distance: 30km round trip. Perfect for a morning ride before the heat.

Route 3: Marathon and the Coast

Full-day adventure heading northeast to Marathon (the famous battle site), then to Rafina for fresh seafood. Return via coastal road through Nea Makri. Distance: 90km total. Roads are excellent.

Local Tip

The small beach at Limanakia, between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, has crystal-clear water and almost no tourists. Look for the dirt parking area on your right heading south.

Practical Tips

Emergency: Dial 112 (universal EU emergency number). Save your rental shop’s number for roadside assistance.

Navigation: Download Google Maps offline for Attica region — signal can be patchy in mountains.

Weather: Best months are April-June and September-October. In summer (July-August), start rides early — temperatures exceed 35°C by midday.
